The collection of OpenBSD ports has been enhanced with the classic desktop environment CDE (Common Desktop Environment), developed in the early 1990s through the joint efforts of Sun Microsystems, HP, IBM, DEC, SCO, Fujitsu, and Hitachi, and for many years supplied as the default graphical environment for Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, Digital UNIX, and UnixWare. In 2012, the CDE 2.1 code was released by The Open Group consortium under the LGPL license.
It includes an XDMCP-compatible login manager, a session manager, a window manager, the CDE FrontPanel, a desktop manager, an inter-process communication bus, a desktop toolkit, tools for application development in shell and C, and components for integrating third-party applications.
