The release of 4MLinux 49.0 is available, a minimalist user distribution that is not a fork of other projects and uses a graphical environment based on the JWM window manager. 4MLinux can be used both as a Live environment for multimedia playback and user tasks, and as a recovery system and platform for launching mini-servers. A live image (x86_64, 1.7 GB) with a graphical environment and a stripped-down console version (x86_64, 16.2 MB) are prepared for download.
In the new version:
- Package versions have been updated: Linux kernel 6.12.39, BusyBox 1.37.0, Mesa 25.1.0, Wine 10.11, Perl 5.40.2, Python 2.7.18, Python 3.13.3, Ruby 3.4.3.
- User applications have been updated: LibreOffice 25.2, AbiWord 3.0.6, GIMP 3.1.2, Gnumeric 1.12.59, Firefox 140., Chrome 138, Thunderbird 140, Audacious 4.4.2, VLC 3.0.21, SMPlayer 25.6.0.
- Support for installation on partitions with the Bcachefs file system has been added.
- Interaction with mobile devices has been improved using PTP/MTP protocols and Bluetooth.
- The 4MLinux GamePack collection has been enriched with the game Brutal Chess and the Stella package with the Atari 2600 VCS emulator.
- Included in the main distribution are the music player Aqualung, the multimedia format converter QWinFF (GUI for FFmpeg), and a utility for displaying system information called Fastfetch.
- Downloadable extensions have been added with gnuplot, the audio editor ReZound, and experimental builds of GIMP (the changelog mentions GIMP4, but it probably refers to the master branch of GIMP).
- Pre-installed drivers with Intel VAPPI support have been added to the LiveCD.
