Steven Deobald announced his departure from the position of Executive Director of the GNOME Foundation, which oversees the development of the GNOME desktop environment. Steven took on the role four months ago, and at a recent board meeting, it was decided that he was not suited for the role of Executive Director, despite achievements such as creating a new donation platform, working on policies, and establishing partnerships with related projects like postmarketOS.
The Executive Director is responsible for managing and developing the GNOME Foundation as an organization, as well as interacting with the board of directors, advisory board, and members of the organization. Following Steven's departure, Allan Day, the lead designer of GNOME Shell at Red Hat, will temporarily take on the duties of Executive Director, while also being appointed the President of the Board.
Before Steven, the position of Executive Director was held by Holly Million, who garnered attention for her diverse range of interests—from producing documentaries and writing paintings to founding an institute for shamanic arts and engaging in herbal therapy. After Holly's departure in July 2024, until a new leader is elected in May 2025, Richard Littauer, a community activist with SustainOSS and one of the leaders of CURIOSS, will temporarily perform the duties of Executive Director. He is also a community engagement manager for the Open Source Collective and has participated in the development of projects like Node.js and IPFS.
