Michael 'Monty' Widenius, co-founder of MySQL and creator of the MariaDB project, expressed his sadness over the mass layoffs at MySQL and, while he is not surprised by Oracle's actions, he is still saddened that it has come to this. Peter Zaitsev, co-founder of Percona and former head of the performance optimization team at MySQL AB, voiced concerns that this move could lead to the gradual phasing out of the MySQL Community edition.
