The Furi Labs project has announced the production of the FLX1s smartphone, which comes with the FuriOS distribution. This distribution is based on Debian 13 and features the Phosh user interface, built on GNOME technologies and the GTK library. The device is available for pre-order at a price of $550. The first batch will be released on October 25, after which devices will be shipped to customers.
To ensure privacy, the device is equipped with three switches that allow users to cut off the camera, microphone, GPS, and baseband module at the hardware level. The firmware does not send telemetry or connect to external servers—all data remains on the user's device and is not synced to the cloud. The phone functionality and calls are supported by the oFono2MM stack and the GNOME Calls application.
The FLX1s supports the launch of applications designed for the Android platform, utilizing a separate isolated container with Android components. Android applications seamlessly integrate into the system and function similarly to stock applications included with FuriOS. The main system features a Linux kernel developed by Mediatek for the Android platform, along with drivers for Android. The Linux environment operates using system components from the Halium project and the libhybris layer, which allows the use of Android drivers running in user space.
Applications can be installed using the GNOME Software application and the OpenStore catalog, which features a selection of Linux programs, as well as applications for Android and Ubuntu. The device supports dual-booting and the ability to run multiple operating systems simultaneously using virtualization based on a hypervisor. KVMAn example of supported alternative systems for installation is Ubuntu Touch. The project’s developments are available on GitHub under open licenses.
