Ascon, a company specializing in CAD development since 1989, has announced the open beta testing of the KOMPAS-3D automated design system for the Linux platform. The product is intended for two-dimensional and three-dimensional design of parts, mechanisms, and structures used in machine engineering, instrumentation, and construction. It supports parametric modeling and modes for object, sheet, surface, and solid design.
Previously, the product was only released for Windows, but official support for running on Linux was provided through Wine. The version offered for testing is noteworthy for its transition to native support, working without layers and built specifically for Linux. The testing, which will last until November 30, covers the KOMPAS-3D and KOMPAS-Grafik 24 products with all basic CAD tools, as well as applications such as 'Cutting', 'Dimension Chains', '3D Model Recognition', and 'Catalog: Couplings'.
Installation packages in DEB and RPM format have been prepared, tested in the Alt Workstation 11.0, Alt Workstation K 11.0, Astra Linux SE 1.8, and RED OS 8.0 distributions. Support for the GNOME, Fly, KDE, and Mate desktop environments is declared. The operation in other distributions and graphical environments is not restricted, but the manufacturer does not provide official support and testing for them. Registration is required to download the packages. Testing participants will be provided with a temporary free license for 60 days.
