The release of the 86Box 5.2 project has been announced, which develops an emulator for x86 architecture systems, allowing the execution of old operating systems and applications, including those used in the early 1980s on IBM PC 5150 and IBM PS/2 computers. It supports accurate low-level emulation of systems, from 8086 processors to Intel Celeron Mendocino. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
A graphical interface is provided for managing the operation, with customization options. of virtual machines. Emulation of various peripheral devices, such as video adapters, sound cards, network cards, and hard disk controllers, is available. Supported operating systems include MS-DOS, Windows 3.11/95, OS/2, various Linux distributions, BeOS, NEXTSTEP, and other older operating systems.
In the new release:
- The emulator for the disk drive features authentic sounds made during disk operations, such as spindle rotation and head movement sounds. Sound can be enabled in the settings by selecting the type of device (separate sound simulation for 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch disk drives is possible).
- Support has been added for various types and models of joysticks, including Gravis PC GamePad, CH Flightstick, CH Virtual Pilot, CH Virtual Pilot Pro, CH Pedals Pro, and Thrustmaster Formula T1/T2.
- The interface for navigating the list of emulated computers has been revamped in the settings. A search feature for devices by name or chipset has been added.
- New BIOS options for various emulated computers have been added.
- Full support for compiling 86Box on 32-bit x86 and ARM32 systems has been discontinued.
- The emulator's startup time has been reduced by optimizing ROM scanning.
