The Turris Omnia NG router has been presented, featuring firmware based on OpenWRT.

The organization CZ.NIC, which is the registrar of the Czech top-level domain CZ and the developer of the free DNS server Knot, has introduced the Turris Omnia NG router, continuing the development of the Turris Omnia device released over the past ten years. Like the previous model, the new router uses a proprietary fork of the open platform OpenWRT, supplied under the name Turris OS. The device is available for sale at a price of 561 euros. Support and firmware updates will be provided for 10 years.

The device goes beyond a typical router and wireless access point and is positioned as a digital hub for homes and small/medium enterprises. In addition to networking capabilities, it provides tools for deploying network-attached storage (NAS), VPN, backup solutions, creating print servers, and running arbitrary server applications.

Based on the Sentinel platform, the firmware features a dynamic firewall with intrusion detection and traffic flow monitoring elements. The firmware updates automatically without requiring any user actions. Management is performed via a web interface or command line.

Among the firmware features is the built-in ability to run Linux containers using the LXC toolkit. Isolated applications can be run in the containers, arbitrary Linux distributions can be installed, and virtual servers, which appear to users as separate computers connected to the local network.
