Collabora has released the Collabora Office suite, which is an edition of the Collabora Online (LibreOffice Online) product, adapted for standalone use on desktop systems. Builds are available for Linux (flatpak), macOS, and Windows. A separate edition for developers, known as Collabora Office Development Edition (CODE), is also available. Previously distributed by Collabora, the desktop office suite built on classic LibreOffice has been renamed to Collabora Office Classic.
Collabora is one of the key contributors to the development of LibreOffice, passing on new features developed for Collabora Online and Collabora Office to the main LibreOffice project. The code for Collabora Online and Collabora Office is fully open under the MPL 2.0 license.
The Collabora Online product enables remote work with the office suite via the web and can serve as an alternative to services like Google Docs and Office 365. Unlike the monolithic LibreOffice and Collabora Office Classic, the Collabora Online package has a client-server architecture, where server LibreOffice Core handles the composition and rendering of documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, while the web application manages the interface.
Collabora Office combines server and browser components into a single package that can be used like a regular local application, fully running on the user's system. The new package retains all the advanced features of Collabora Online, such as support for multiple users collaborating on a single document. Additionally, Collabora Office integrates better with the operating system environment and supports offline operation.
Differences from classic LibreOffice and Collabora Office Classic include the complete removal of Java components, simplified settings, different default values, and a more modern user interface utilizing Javascript, WebGL, and CSS instead of VCL widgets. In terms of document format support, Collabora Office is equivalent to LibreOffice. It includes editors for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, vector graphics, and diagrams. Components for working with databases (Base) and the macro editor have been excluded (the ability to run macros has been preserved).
