The release of the uutils coreutils project 0.5.0 (Rust Coreutils) has been published, which develops an analogue of the GNU Coreutils package written in Rust. The coreutils package includes over a hundred utilities, including sort, cat, chmod, chown, chroot, cp, date, dd, echo, hostname, id, ln, and ls. The project's goal is to create a cross-platform alternative implementation of Coreutils, capable of running on Windows, Redox, and Fuchsia platforms, among others.
Rust Coreutils is utilized by default in the Ubuntu 25.10 release and is applied in the AerynOS (Serpent OS) and Apertis (developed by Collabora) distributions. Unlike GNU Coreutils, the Rust implementation is distributed under the permissive MIT license, instead of the copyleft GPL license. Additionally, the same team of developers is working on Rust-based analogs of the util-linux, diffutils, findutils, and procps utility sets, as well as the sed and login programs.
In the new version of Rust Coreutils:
- Compatibility with the reference test suite of GNU Coreutils has been improved, with 566 tests successfully passing, which is 22 more than in the previous version (544). 55 tests (down from 56) failed, and 23 tests (down from 33) were skipped. A compatibility level of 87.75% has been declared (up from 85.80%). The reference test suite has been updated to Coreutils 9.9, which introduced 11 new tests.
- The fold utility has implemented line breaking considering the presence of combined Unicode characters (for example, base character + combining diacritical mark).
- The ptx utility has added GNU compatibility mode, implementing a format for simple dumb input-output terminals.
- Text processing has been improved in various utilities.
- Functionality from the hashsum utility has been transferred to the cksum utility.
- The install utility has added support for parsing modes that contain comma-separated lists of items. Also improved umask handling.
- The seq utility has enhanced its handling of large integers.
- Optimizations have been made to reduce memory consumption and improve performance.
- Continuous integration testing has been ensured for OpenBSD and Redox platforms.
- Support for the Cygwin platform has been improved.
- Features have been expanded, issues resolved, and missing options added for the basenc, chmod, chksum, cp, dd, du, env, fold, hashsum, install, ln, ls, mkfifo, nl, nohup, numfmt, od, pr, ptx, readlink, seq, shuf, sort, stdbuf, stty, tail, tee, timeout, uucore, and uudoc utilities.
