The AOUSD Alliance (Alliance for OpenUSD), overseen by the Linux Foundation, has published the OpenUSD Core Specification 1.0, which defines a universal format and language for describing 3D scenes optimized for collaborative work on 3D content. The specification is presented as an open standard for creating 3D content and exchanging data between different 3D editors and platforms. Companies such as Pixar, Lucasfilm, Adobe, Apple, Amazon, Autodesk, NVIDIA, Sony, Intel, and Meta participated in the development of the specification. Companies like Hexagon, PTC, Renault, Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Siemens; Amazon, IKEA, Epic Games, Cesium, and Esri have expressed their support for the standard.
The specification covers the description of grammar and data types; data representation and transformation models; compositing algorithms; methods for creating and traversing scene graphs; methods for querying values for each scene object; file formats USDA (readable representation), USDC (binary format), and USDZ (package format) for data exchange; and tools for testing and validating compliance with the specification. A reference implementation of OpenUSD has been proposed to simplify compatibility checks.
The OpenUSD project, launched by Pixar nine years ago, provides tools for encoding scalable, hierarchically related, static, and time-distributed data. OpenUSD features a set of operators for compositing, resource management, layered processing, and file reference management, allowing the linkage of a series of disparate resources into a single graphical scene while preserving the ability to process and replace each resource separately. To extend OpenUSD, a plugin system is provided that can be used for integration with other formats and translation of any data into the OpenUSD graphic scene format.
