Galen Hunt, Managing Director of Microsoft Azure Sphere and former head of the operating systems development group at Microsoft Research, presented a research project aimed at creating tools that combine AI with traditional algorithms for the automated rewriting of Microsoft's largest codebases in Rust. The project's goal is to completely eliminate C and C++ from Microsoft's codebases by 2030. The mission includes addressing technical debt in large-scale projects. It is noted that the developed infrastructure for code processing is designed to enable a single engineer to translate a million lines of code in a month. The project is being developed within the Microsoft CoreAI division.
