Statistics have been published regarding the programming languages used in GNOME and GNOME applications. The project has a total of 6.7 million lines of code, of which 1.6 million are for applications and 5.1 million for libraries and core components of GNOME.
- The C language continues to be the default for GNOME libraries, with more than 2/3 of the lines of code for core components of GNOME written in this language. The largest of these components are GTK (820 thousand lines), GLib (560 thousand lines), and Mutter (390 thousand lines).
- Rust accounts for 523 thousand lines of code, of which about 400 thousand are used in wrappers for core libraries and mostly generated automatically. Notable libraries in Rust include Librsvg and glycin.
- Approximately 190 thousand lines are written in Vala, of which about 100 thousand lines are present in the Vala repository.
- There are 242 thousand lines of code in Python, with 110 thousand attributed to the Orca application.
- 106 thousand lines are written in JavaScript, of which 65 thousand are found in GNOME Shell, representing about half of the entire codebase of GNOME Shell.

Distribution of programming languages in core GNOME applications: 44.8% of the code is written in C, 20.7% in Vala, 10.3% in Rust, 6.9% in Python, 13.8% in JavaScript, and 3.45% in C++.
When considering third-party programs listed in the GNOME Circle directory, the majority of the code (41.7%) is written in Rust, with Python in second place (29.2%) and Vala in third (13%). C accounts for 6% of the programs, JavaScript for 10%, and Crystal for 1%. The most popular programs from the GNOME Circle directory (based on the number of installations in the latest update): Blanket, Eyedropper, Newsflash, Fragments, and Shortwav.
