The Loss32 project develops a Win32/Linux distribution that combines the Linux kernel with a Windows-style graphical environment built on Wine and custom ReactOS components. The distribution is aimed at recreating the Windows desktop environment and providing tools for seamless execution of Windows applications while still supporting conventional Linux programs. The first prototype of Loss32 is scheduled for release this month.
In its goals, the project closely resembles ReactOS and also aims to recreate a Windows-style operating system, but differs in its rejection of the Windows NT kernel. According to the creators of Loss32, the primary factor hindering ReactOS development is the attempt to create its own equivalent of the Windows NT kernel, which prevents achieving adequate hardware support, stability, and functionality. Loss32 has decided to focus on creating an environment for running Windows applications, using a system environment based on well-functioning Debian 13 and Wine.
Unlike traditional Linux distributions, in Loss32, user-space components are replaced with Wine wherever possible, and the desktop environment is based on Win32 applications and libraries like explorer.exe and shell32.dll from Wine and ReactOS. Mutter is used as the compositing manager. The design is styled to emulate the classic Windows interface used from the late 1990s to the early 2010s. The system allows loading and running .exe files with Windows programs just as it is done in Windows.
