A new branch of the dual-panel file manager Double Commander 1.2 is available, developing an alternative to Total Commander and providing compatibility with its plugins. The quality level of branch 1.2 is currently rated as a beta version (in branch 1.1.x, the beta version designation was changed to 'gamma' in release 1.1.12, seven months after 1.1.0). Three user interface options are offered — based on GTK2, Qt5, and Qt6. The code is written in Pascal and distributed under the GPLv2 license. Builds are prepared for Linux (AppImage, rpm, deb), FreeBSD, Windows, and macOS.
Among the features of Double Commander are the execution of all operations in the background, support for batch renaming of files by mask, a tab-based interface, dual-panel mode with vertical or horizontal panel layouts, a built-in text editor with syntax highlighting, handling archives as virtual directories, advanced search tools, a customizable panel, support for all Total Commander plugin formats, compatibility with Windows platform plugins, and a file operations logging feature.
