Microsoft has revised the security rules for Windows 11. Now, administrator rights are required to access the local storage settings page, a key section for managing disk space, cleanup tools, and system files. On paper, this change may seem minor, but it could confuse users who find that a previously accessible section now requires elevated permissions.
Microsoft plans to roll out the next security update package on February 10, 2026. Starting with this update, a User Account Control (UAC) prompt will appear when opening the storage settings page in the 'Settings' app. The company noted that this change aims to ensure that 'only authorized Windows users can access system files.' In other words, it adds another layer of security to the everyday interaction process with devices running Windows 11.
Along with this upcoming update, which will be released as part of Patch Tuesday, a number of additional improvements and new features will be introduced, including the ability to seamlessly transfer sessions of certain applications from Android smartphones to computers. This package also contains a major update for Windows MIDI services, including enhanced support for MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0, support for WinMM and WinRT MIDI 1.0, and more. The software giant has also improved support for external fingerprint scanners that can be used for authentication through the Windows Hello feature.
All the listed innovations, along with fixes for known issues, are implemented in the preliminary version of update KB5074105, which is available for download but not mandatory for installation. This update package was published by Microsoft on January 29, and since then, anyone interested can install it on compatible devices.
