In the Linux kernel, the transition to sleep mode has been accelerated for slow SSDs.

A change has been proposed for the Linux kernel that optimizes the new swap allocator's performance during operations related to hibernation. During development, one of the developers noticed that rapid allocation of large regions in the swap space was not supported during the transition to hibernation. On systems with slow SSDs, this caused performance issues when using 4K blocks, leading to noticeable delays during the hibernation process.

Testing on a system with a Samsung SSD 830 (SATA II, 3.0 Gbps) showed that the proposed patch, which includes just a few dozen lines of code, reduced the hibernation time by almost 10 times—from 324 seconds to 35 seconds. There is consideration for including the patch in the upcoming 7.0 kernel branch as well as backporting it to 6.18, 6.19, and possibly other supported stable branches.
