The developers of the GNOME project have announced the start of redirecting some requests to the main Git repositories of the project to mirrors hosted on GitHub. All operations for "git clone" from gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/ to github.com/GNOME/ are now being redirected. The project migrated its development infrastructure to GitLab in 2018, having previously used cgit and Bugzilla.
The reason given is to reduce costs due to high traffic volume. It has been noted that if the measures taken prove insufficient, additional actions will be implemented to reduce traffic consumption, which will allow for a decrease in costs and remove the redirect from GitLab to GitHub. The change has already caused problems for some users, leading to the loading of outdated data and the failure of automatic redirection.
