Apocalyptic scenarios of humanity being enslaved by artificial intelligence may remain the fantasies of Hollywood screenwriters, but in real life, humans are already competing with AI for resources. At the very least, it is already being used to hoard memory modules necessary for developing its own computing infrastructure.
Galileo researchers, referred to by TechRadar, found that software bots access e-commerce pages for ordering DDR5 memory modules six times more frequently than humans. Such activity is rarely welcomed by sellers; during one campaign, over 10 million requests originating from bots were blocked. A sample showed that within one hour, bots made 50,000 requests across 91 e-commerce pages offering DDR5 for sale. Each page was queried an average of 551 times in that hour, which equates to one request every 6.5 seconds.
The range of offerings targeted by the bots spans from DDR5 modules equipped with colorful heatsinks and RGB lighting to industrial-grade memory sticks. In fact, bots are even employed to monitor individual components meant for motherboard manufacturers—such as the DIMM slots themselves. Queries occur around the clock with brief interruptions caused by technical failures. In such conditions, live buyers have less chance of obtaining desired memory modules at reasonable prices.
