New releases of the Linux From Scratch 13.0 (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch 13.0 (BLFS) guides have been presented, structured solely in the edition with the system manager systemd. The Linux From Scratch guide provides instructions for building a basic Linux system from scratch, using only the source code of the necessary software. Beyond Linux From Scratch complements the LFS instructions with information on building and configuring around 1000 software packages that cover various areas of use, from DBMS and server systems to graphical interfaces and media players.
The new branch is notable for the cessation of updates to the Linux From Scratch (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch (BLFS) guides in the SysVinit initialization system configuration. Access to the LFS/BLFS 12.4 guide with SysVinit will be maintained, while the LFS/BLFS 13.0 release will be formed only in the edition with the system manager systemd.
In Linux From Scratch 13.0, 36 packages have been updated, including the Linux kernel 6.18.10, systemd 259.1, binutils-2.46, glibc-2.42, vim 9.2.0078, zlib 1.3.2, Python 3.14.3, coreutils 9.10, openssl 3.6.1, and sqlite 3.50.4. Errors in the boot scripts have been fixed, and editorial work has been carried out on the explanatory materials throughout the book.
Beyond Linux From Scratch 13.0 features over 1500 updates. Among other things, versions of GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, and LXQt have been updated. LXQt adds support for Wayland. New packages have been added: Glycin, Showtime, Loupe, simdutf, kquickimageeditor, qtkeychain, kddockwidgets, lxqt-wayland-session, libheif, libde265, libfyaml, SVT-AV1, dav1d, SDL3, sdl2-compat, Maturin, setuptools_rust, semantic_version, uv_build, blueprint-compiler. Packages removed include sqlite (moved to LFS), Sendmail, atkmm-2.28.x, dhcpcd, bridge-utils, pcre2, and webp-pixbuf-loader.
The 'Gaming Linux From Scratch 13.0' guide has also been updated with instructions for installing computer games and related software, such as Steam and Wine, in LFS 13.0. The guide covers more than 100 packages.
In addition to LFS and BLFS, several additional books have been released within the project:
- âAutomated Linux From Scratchâ â a framework for automating the building of LFS systems and managing packages;
- âCross Linux From Scratchâ â a description of cross-platform building of LFS systems, supporting architectures: x86, x86_64, sparc, mips, PowerPC, alpha, hppa, arm;
- âHardened Linux From Scratchâ â instructions for increasing the security of LFS, applying additional patches and restrictions;
- âLFS Hintsâ â a collection of additional tips with descriptions of alternative solutions for the steps described in LFS and BLFS.
- Multilib-LFS is a guide for installing Multilib to run 32-bit programs in 64-bit environments.
