The River 0.4.0 composite manager has been released. Unlike other composite managers based on the Wayland protocol, it employs a modular architecture that separates the window manager into a distinct program. In River, window managers are plug-ins, and users can choose according to their preferences. The project's code is written in Zig and is distributed under the GPLv3 license.
River can run in nested sessions on top of other X11 and Wayland servers, as well as without layers, using KMS/DRM drivers for output. To separate the functionality of composite and window managers, the river-window-management-v1 Wayland protocol is being developed by the project. Functions such as window decoration, input focus management, pointer control, keyboard shortcuts, position, and size of windows are handled by the window manager.
It is possible to swap window managers on the fly without interrupting the session. Eight different window managers compatible with River are available, including tiled styles like DWM or xmonad, Emacs-like styles such as EXWM, and traditional stack-based and scrolling ribbon types. Xwayland support is provided for running X11 applications.
Reasons for separating the composite and window managers include lowering the threshold for writing window managers, allowing for implementation in high-level garbage-collected languages that do not impact the performance of the composite manager, and enabling hot-swapping of window managers without restarting the running graphical programs or the composite manager itself; simplifying experiments related to window manager design. server The limitations of the river-window-management-v1 protocol include the lack of functionality beyond 2D operations on the desktop. For example, it does not support creating complex effects or 3D interfaces for virtual reality systems.
