The release of the proprietary Vivaldi 7.9 browser, developed based on the Chromium engine by former developers of the Opera Presto engine, has occurred. Vivaldi builds are prepared for Linux, Windows, and macOS. The changes made to the Chromium codebase are distributed under an open license. The browser interface is written in JavaScript using the React library, Node.js platform, Browserify, and various ready-made NPM modules. The implementation of the interface is available in source texts but under a proprietary license.
The project aims to create a customizable and functional browser that maintains user data privacy. Key features include a tracker and ad blocker, note managers, history and bookmarks, private browsing mode, synchronization secured with end-to-end encryption, tab grouping mode, a sidebar, a configurator with many settings, horizontal tab display mode, as well as an integrated email client, RSS reader, and calendar.
The following improvements are presented in the new version:
- Interface auto-hide — this feature allows for automatically hiding all interface elements while viewing pages, including the tab bar, address bar, sidebar, and status bar, either separately or all at once. Among other things, this feature is also available in full-screen view mode.
- Pair tabs — allows users to work in the main tab and open all links from that page in a pair tab placed next to the main one in the same window.
- Separate window for composing emails — the ability to detach the message creation window, allowing it to be positioned where it is convenient for the user, including on a second display. Simultaneously, optimization for managing mailing lists has been conducted.
