On March 24, 2026, the releases of 5.3.0 and 6.0.0 of the popular graphics editor Krita took place. Alongside the stable version 5.3.0, version 6.0.0 was introduced, marking the transition to the Qt 6 library. The distinction of these releases is that both versions are built from the same source code. The choice between them depends on the versions of Qt used for the build.
Changes:
- Krita 6.0.0 — experimental: it is recommended to use version 5.3.0 for real work. Krita 6 should become the main version only by the end of the year when it is deemed stable enough;
- Wayland support: version 6.0.0, due to the transition to Qt6, has gained more functionality in Wayland environments;
- AppImage and compatibility: for AppImage users: due to updates in the AppImage runtime, some versions of AppImageLauncher may be incompatible. If issues arise, it is recommended to refer to the AppImage runtime documentation;
- completely revamped text engine: added text editing directly on the canvas, full support for OpenType, and the ability to place text inside shapes;
- tool improvements: the fill tool can now automatically close gaps in paths, and the 'Liquify' tool has become significantly faster;
- new filters: Propagate Colors and Reset Transparent;
- HDR support: improved handling of HDR images;
- file formats: improved support for PSD files.
