The release of Archinstall 4.0 has been published, which since 2021 has been included as an option in the Arch Linux installation ISO images. Archinstall operates in console mode and can be used instead of the default manual installation mode of the distribution. The Archinstall code is written in Python and is distributed under the GPLv3 license.
Archinstall provides both dialog (guided) and automated operating modes. In automated mode, there is the capability to use scripts to deploy standard configurations. The installer also supports installation profiles, such as the ‘desktop’ profile for selecting a desktop environment (KDE, GNOME, Awesome) and installing the necessary packages for its operation, or the ‘webserver’ and ‘database’ profiles for choosing and installing components for web servers and DBMS. Six years ago, an attempt was made to create a version of Archinstall with a graphical installation interface, but it did not progress.
In the new version of Archinstall, the console user interface has been transitioned to use the textual library instead of curses, allowing for an improved appearance and simplifying the maintenance of many menu elements. Other changes include the addition of instructions for downloading the ISO image in virtual machine, replacing pytest configuration files with the TOML format, integrating firewalld support into the firewall menu, reworking the code for installing configuration files with network settings, isolating LVM handlers into a separate module, discontinuing NTFS support for the root filesystem, and redesigning the menu for asynchronous operation.
