After several years of development, debugging, discussion, refinement, and efforts, a stable release has come out. Alt Mobile is a distribution for mobile devices that is supported at the same level as other distributions on the Eleventh platform.
This is not AOSP — it is the familiar «Alt». Unlike most popular mobile operating systems, Alt Mobile is not based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and does not contain its components — it is a 'purebred' Linux distribution from the Alt family.
The entire source code is open — from the build profile up to packages, included in the distribution, and anyone can contribute by leaving a suggestion on Bugzilla.
What’s inside?
The graphical shell of this release is Phosh 0.49.0 — a shell adapted for touch device form factors with medium and small displays, inheriting the ideology and technology stack of GNOME.
The distribution includes:
- GNOME applications — 'Settings', 'App Center', 'Authenticator', 'Console', and others;
- More specific utilities for mobile devices — Phosh Tour, Phosh Mobile Settings, Phosh Anti-Spam, Waydroid, Warp, Fractal, and others;
- Developer programs from the ALT Linux Team — 'Folder Manager', 'Hash Sum', ALT Tweaks, 'Domain Authentication'.
The distribution uses the Eleventh platform (stable branch of the Sisyphus repository), providing access to thousands of packages and allows the installation of familiar programs developed by the GNOME project community based on the GTK4/Adwaita stack, or any others. SSH, terminal, APT — everything is like in desktop 'Alt'! (and even CVEs and bugs)
More details can be read in the Release Notes in our knowledge base.
Where and how to try it?
Supported virtual machines, PINE64 devices (PinePhone, PinePhone Pro, PineTab 2), tablets from MIG on the x86_64 architecture.
Build options for hardware platforms:
- def — general-purpose distribution;
- pine — for PINE64 devices;
- tablet-def — for MIG devices.
All installation instructions can also be found in the 'Installation and Update' section of the knowledge base.
An initial setup application has been developed for the distribution “ReadySet”.
The Alt mobile ecosystem is actively developing. For instance, recently at the community's request, the Dart language and Flutter framework appeared in the repository, which allows creating and packaging popular applications that adapt well to the mobile environment due to its cross-platform capabilities.
