Microsoft will enforce the upgrade of computers running Windows 11 24H2 to the current 25H2. Support for 24H2 will officially end on October 13, 2026 — this new measure is clearly part of the company’s strategy to ensure all devices remain up to date.
The automatic installation of the new platform version will roll out to computers with Windows 11 24H2 in Home and Pro variants; systems within corporate infrastructure, which are under centralized management, will not be included in the forced upgrade program for now. An 'intelligent' system will be used during installation, which, through machine learning algorithms, will determine the readiness of the computer for the procedure.
However, Microsoft has not yet revealed how exactly the machine learning algorithm will determine this readiness: there are no specifics regarding the criteria or the data used. Users who prefer to act independently can check for updates in Windows settings at any time — provided that the computer meets the system requirements.
This week, Microsoft released an emergency update, aimed at fixing issues from the previous one. The update released at the end of March, numbered KB5079391, caused installation problems and displayed the error code '0x80073712', which usually indicates that files in the package are missing or corrupted. Microsoft acknowledged the issue, halted the release of the faulty package, and released an unplanned update numbered KB5086672 instead — it fixes installation issues and includes all improvements and features that were supposed to be released in March.
