The composite server Cage 0.3 has been released, utilizing Wayland and designed for the isolated launch of individual applications in kiosk mode. Use cases for Cage include creating home automation systems, demonstration stands, electronic signage, and self-service terminals. The project's code is written in C and is distributed under the MIT license.
The interface in Cage is limited to a single application; the user cannot exit this application and access the operating system. The screen is bound to a single output device, and all auxiliary dialogs are displayed in the center of the screen without the ability to move or resize. Data can be placed and extracted through the clipboard. Applications are directly linked to the launched graphical environment; for example, to create a kiosk with the Epiphany browser, simply execute "cage /usr/bin/epiphany," and upon exiting the program, the composite server server also terminates its operation.
Among the most notable changes in the new release:
- The wlroots library has been updated to version 0.20, which implements support for defining the color representation of Wayland surfaces, color management, and HDR usage through the color-representation-v1 and color-management-v1 protocols when using the rendering backend via the Vulkan API. Support for Wayland protocols cursor-shape-v1 for customizing the appearance of the cursor, ext-workspace-v1 for utilizing the concept, virtual desktops and xdg-toplevel-tag-v1 for identifying windows/surfaces through tag binding has also been added.
- Support for the wlr-foreign-toplevel-management protocol has been added, allowing the management of windows from external programs.
- Support for the drm-lease protocol has been introduced, providing tools for creating a stereoscopic image with different buffers for the left and right eyes when outputting to virtual reality headsets.
