The release of the free document layout package Scribus 1.6.6 has been announced. The package provides tools for professional print layout, includes tools for PDF generation, and supports working with separate color profiles, CMYK, spot colors, and ICC. The program is written using the Qt toolkit and is distributed under the GPLv2+ license. Ready binary builds are prepared for Linux (AppImage), macOS, and Windows. In version 1.6.6, mainly bugs have been fixed, the code of many plugins has been cleaned up, scaling has been improved when importing documents from MS Publisher, and files for building in MSVC 2026 using the Windows 10 SDK have been added.
Simultaneously, the release of Scribus 1.7.3 has been published. The 1.7 branch is presented as experimental—after final stabilization and recognition of readiness for widespread implementation based on the 1.7 branch, a stable release of Scribus 1.8.0 will be formed. The 1.7 branch is notable for being ported to Qt 6, supporting a dark theme, translating icons to SVG format, a new implementation of dockable toolbars, and a redesigned color selection panel. Builds have been created for Linux (AppImage, Flatpak), macOS, and Windows.
Among the changes in Scribus 1.7.3:
- The spell-checking mechanism has been redesigned during document editing. The check is now performed in a separate thread, highlighting errors as text is typed and edited. An undo option for accepted corrections is available. Accurate checking of words with non-printing characters has been ensured.
- The search and replace interface has been revamped, implementing a mode for searching across all windows, providing support for hiding advanced settings, and adding the ability to use the selected fragment as a search mask.
- A tool for quickly changing the case of characters in the selected text block has been added. Various modes are available, including inversion.
- The barcode generator has been upgraded with a redesigned interface, full access to BWIPP (Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript) options, text formatting settings, and border adjustments. It now allows for re-editing barcode objects and includes functions for programmatic barcode generation from scripts.
- The JPEG XL image import has been significantly improved.
