In the night of April 17, the messenger Telegram unexpectedly resumed functioning for part of the audience in Russia, writes the ‘Durov Code’ with reference to incoming messages from users on Android devices. According to the source, this is not related to the actions of regulators.
According to the ‘Durov Code’, all features are functioning correctly without proxies on the latest versions of the app, including beta builds, since late evening on April 16 — VPN sending and receiving messages, as well as media uploads.
The resource noted that to set up the correct functioning of Telegram services, several restarts of the application may be required. It became apparent that in the Telegram messenger in Russia on Android, the corresponding settings section indicates the account is connected from another country — even without launching a proxy or VPN. It is also reported that the messenger works without proxies and VPN only on Android and only for Premium subscribers. Thus, the sudden resumption of Telegram's functionality is not linked to the actions of regulators or providers.
Experts agree that a combination of factors currently suggests possible changes within the Telegram app itself, which have allowed it to start working again in Russia. This is at least explained by the fact that the messenger does not work on iPhones with the same operator, while on Android everything functions as before. ‘As we can see, in the “Devices” section, the geolocation of the active session suddenly changes to the USA — the same location is displayed for many users. Meanwhile, some of them mention they have never used services that could provide such a “distant” foreign IP’, says the expert.
Additionally, according to traffic analysis, atypical masked connections can be traced. At the same time, problems have been noted in the messenger's operation: speed drops, media fails to load, but after some time everything comes back to normal.
Earlier, Telegram founder Pavel Durov, commenting on the blocking of Telegram in Russia, promised, that the messenger will continue to adapt, making its traffic more difficult to detect and block.
