Huawei was one of the first companies to experiment with foldable smartphone technology, launching the Pura X model — a so-called wide-format foldable smartphone. Its dimensions are between clamshell smartphones and book-style foldable smartphones. Today, the company introduced the Huawei Pura X Max model in China. The device is equipped with larger 5.4-inch external and 7.7-inch internal displays.
While the original Pura X model had a media content viewing-friendly display with a diagonal of 6.3 inches and an aspect ratio of 16:10, the X Max model has an aspect ratio for its internal display closer to the typical for book-style foldable smartphones, at 14.1:10, which is just slightly larger than older models with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The external display ratio (with a resolution of 1848 × 1264 pixels) is almost the same.
Both displays are based on LTPO 2.0 OLED panels with a refresh rate of 1–120 Hz and high-frequency PWM dimming at 1440 Hz. The smartphone supports control with the Huawei M-Pen 3 Mini stylus.
The stylus is labeled 'mini' because it is more compact than conventional styluses for this form factor of devices. The pen comes with a special case. The package also includes a case with a magnetic flip stand for the smartphone.
The Huawei Pura X Max is powered by a 5300 mAh battery (compared to 4720 mAh in the X model). The new smartphone supports wired charging at 66W and SuperCharge wireless charging at 50W.
The Huawei Pura X Max is equipped with a Kirin 9030 Pro processor (6 nm, 9 cores; one core at 2.75 GHz, four cores at 2.27 GHz, and four cores at 1.72 GHz; graphics Maleoon 935). Compared to the Kirin 9020 processor in the X model, its performance is 30% higher. The chip is cooled using a vapor chamber and a graphene sheet. Huawei no longer uses the Android operating system; instead, HarmonyOS 6.1 is used in the Chinese brand's smartphones.
The X Max chassis is made of aluminum alloy. It offers a higher level of protection against dust and moisture. While the X model had an IPX8 rating (no protection against dust), the X Max features an IP58/IP59 rating (dust protection, resistance to immersion in water, and exposure to jets of hot water). The external display is protected by second-generation Kunlun glass.
The main camera is based on a 50 MP sensor with an optical image stabilization lens and a variable aperture (f/1.4–4.0). Additionally, the smartphone has a 50 MP periscope lens with an f/2.2 aperture and optical image stabilization, as well as a 12.5 MP ultra-wide-angle camera with f/2.2 optics. All three cameras utilize RYYB sensors, which feature a yellow subpixel instead of a green one. The smartphone also includes two 8-megapixel selfie cameras, one on each display. They are primarily intended for video calls, but high-quality selfies can be taken using the main camera when needed. The cameras use Huawei's proprietary XMAGE image processing system, as well as a second-generation color sensor.
In comparison, the original Pura X model is equipped with a 50 MP main camera with a fixed f/1.6 aperture, an 8 MP telephoto lens, and a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle camera.
The dimensions of the Pura X Max in its unfolded state are 166.5 × 120 × 5.2 mm (compared to 143.2 × 91.7 × 7.2 mm for the X model), and when folded, they are 85 × 120 × 11.2 mm (compared to 91.7 × 74.3 × 15.1 mm for the X model). The weight of the new device is 229 grams (compared to 193.7 grams for the X model).
Unfortunately, Huawei has not announced whether the Pura X Max will be available for sale outside of China. In the country, the device is available starting today.
The price of the Huawei Pura X Max smartphone ranges from 11,000 yuan (approximately $1615) for the 12/256 GB memory model to 14,000 yuan (approximately $2055) for the version with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage.
