Inferno64

Inferno64

Quietly and unobtrusively, the distributed operating system Inferno64 has been released – a modern rework of the classic OS Inferno, designed for 64-bit platforms (amd64/arm64) and capable of running on Linux as well.

The project is positioned as a 'next-generation distributed computing environment': the system combines heterogeneous devices (old laptops, phones, desktops) into a single peer-to-peer computing network. It is based on the classic Inferno model with a file representation of resources and the 9P protocol.

Features and innovations of the system:

  • each process is a the virtual machine;
  • everything is a file, a legacy from plan9;
  • distributed grid computations;
  • Dis VM with JIT compilation for amd64 and arm64;
  • integrated SQLite and updated cryptography/compression;
  • file interface to LLM (via integration with llama.cpp);
  • Wayland client and updated audio subsystem for Linux.

Particular emphasis has been placed on using the system as a platform for distributed computing and local execution of AI workloads (including agent scenarios).
