Proxmox VE 9.2 has been released, a distribution for managing virtual servers

The release of Proxmox Virtual Environment 9.2 has been published, a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux, aimed at deploying and managing virtual servers using LXC and KVM, capable of serving as an alternative to products like VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix Hypervisor. The size of the installation ISO image is 1.7 GB.

Proxmox VE provides tools for deploying a fully functional industrial-grade virtual server system, managed through a web interface designed for handling hundreds or even thousands of virtual machines. The distribution includes built-in tools for organizing backups of virtual environments and offers out-of-the-box clustering support, including the ability to migrate virtual environments from one node to another without downtime. Features of the web interface include: support for secure VNC console; role-based access management to all available objects (VM, storage, nodes, etc.); and support for various authentication mechanisms (MS ADS, LDAP, Linux PAM, Proxmox VE authentication).

In the new release:

  • Synchronization with the Debian 13.5 package base has been completed. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 7.0. New releases of QEMU 11.0, LXC 7.0, OpenZFS 2.4, and Ceph 19.2.3/20.2.1 have been incorporated.
  • A dynamic load balancing mode has been added to the cluster resource scheduler (CRS). In this mode, based on real-time metrics of resource consumption by nodes and guest systems, the distribution of guest systems across nodes in the cluster is performed. Among other things, guest systems operating in high availability mode can automatically migrate from one node to another to reduce imbalance in the cluster. The balancing behavior is configured through control panel high availability in the web interface.
  • Support for WireGuard and BGP protocols has been added to the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) stack to facilitate network interaction between clusters. Among other things, fine-tuning of BGP/EVPN route filtering is possible using route maps and prefix lists. Additional options for configuring EVPN controllers and the ability to use IPv6 with EVPN have also been added.
  • Tools for creating, editing, and deleting custom virtual CPU models have been added to the web interface under the 'Datacenter → Guest Resources/Hardware' section, which define what CPU capabilities will be provided inside of virtual machines.
  • The ability to temporarily deactivate high availability mode for the entire cluster has been introduced, which can be useful during maintenance, for example, to pause HA event triggers while making changes to the network infrastructure. After deactivation, event processing is simply stopped, and the resource state is saved and restored upon reactivation.
Management is performed using the new 'disarm-ha' and 'arm-ha' commands.
  • The ability to apply Microsoft and Windows UEFI 2023 certificates has been added to the web interface and API.
