The release of the dual-pane file manager GNOME Commander 2.0 has taken place, optimized for use in the GNOME desktop environment. GNOME Commander offers features such as tabs, command line access, bookmarks, customizable color schemes, a folder skipping mode when selecting files, access to external data via SFTP and SAMBA, expandable context menus, automatic mounting of external drives, access to navigation history, plugin support, a built-in text and image viewer, search functions, renaming by mask, and directory comparison. The code is distributed under the GPLv3 license.
In the new version:
- The codebase has been rewritten from C++ to Rust.
- The transition from GTK3 to GTK4 has been completed.
- The code license has changed from GPLv2 to GPLv3.
- On May 17, Vladimir Palant was appointed as the project maintainer, who at one time created the ad blocker Adblock Plus.
- The application includes a terminal emulator that displays the output of executed commands. The View menu has been updated to include an option for automatically hiding the terminal when inactive.
- The quick search panel has been redesigned, allowing it to also filter the list of displayed files. The search query applies to any part of the file name unless the masks ‘*’ and ‘?’ are explicitly set. A button for case-sensitive searches has been added. By default, the search starts not from the beginning of the list but from the current position within it.
- Performance has been improved and the search dialog capabilities have been expanded. Closing the dialog does not clear the search results. During the search, a progress indicator displays the path in which the search is currently taking place.
- In the built-in viewer, the handling of file encodings has been unified, a setting for changing the font has been added, the search dialog has been replaced with a search panel, hexadecimal value search has been implemented without case sensitivity, a command for selecting all text (‘Select All’) has been added, and a context menu for images has been implemented.
The binary view mode has been renamed to ‘Fixed Width’ and supports UTF-8.
- For individuals with visual impairments, full support for screen reader functionality has been provided, allowing recognition of the context of different application functions.
- When restoring a session, the restoration of the selected files' state, sorting order, column hiding, and resizing in the panels has been implemented.
