Firefox 152 Released with an Updated Configurator and JPEG XL Support

Firefox 152 has been released, along with updates to previous long-term support branches—140.12.0 and 115.37.0. Firefox 153, scheduled for release on July 21, will soon enter beta testing.

Key new features in Firefox 152 (1, 2, 3):

  • The configurator interface has been redesigned, offering expanded settings search capabilities, splitting large sections into several separate pages, improving navigation, and updating labels and settings descriptions.

  • Experimental support has been added for the JPEG XL image format, standardized in 2021 (ISO/IEC 18181) as a universal replacement for JPEG. It outperforms WebP, JPEG, PNG, and GIF in compression efficiency and supports lossless compression of existing JPEG files, HDR, animation, transparency, progressive loading, and multilayer images. JPEG XL can be enabled in the "Firefox Labs" section of the configurator.
  • In private browsing mode, you can temporarily disable tracking code blocking for websites that are experiencing issues due to blocking. Potential issues are detected when the user refreshes the page. For reloaded pages with blocked trackers, a notification appears at the top of the page offering the option to temporarily disable tracker blocking for the current tab.

  • Video playback control buttons (play, stop, mute, loop, and full-screen) are now duplicated in the context menu, allowing playback control to be maintained even on sites that block buttons in their video players (such as Instagram and TikTok).

  • Added the ability to mute sound in all windows at once by entering the commands "mute", "shush" or "sssh" in the address bar
  • In assemblies for Linux и Windows You can now copy a link to a page in a tab by selecting "Share > Copy Link" in the context menu displayed when you right-click on a tab (this allows you to copy the link without switching to the tab). If multiple tabs are selected, you can copy multiple links in this way.

  • The toolbar content customization interface (More Tools > Customize Toolbar) now allows you to pin the "Send tab" button.

  • Changing the page zoom using the keyboard or mouse is now done in smaller steps.
  • When you close a page or switch to another tab after initiating the download of a PDF document or other directly displayed file, the downloaded content now opens in a background tab.
  • Buttons for opening content in a new tab or a new tab group have been added to the context menu of the sidebar with a list of tabs on other user devices.
  • The "Show comments" option has been added to the web developer tools to enable and disable the display of comments ( ) in HTML when inspecting the page.
  • The Notifications API provides the ability to add buttons with custom actions that appear below the notification text.
  • The field-sizing CSS property has been added, allowing you to make the size of form elements dependent on their content, for example, to automatically increase the size of a text field as data is entered.
  • The Pointer Lock API implements the unadjustedMovement option, which, when enabled, transmits mouse movement data in its pure form, without adjustments or acceleration. For example, unadjustedMovement allows for improved movement quality in first-person shooters.
  • In Firefox for Android An AI function for summarizing long articles with one tap has been added (currently only English is supported). A feature for sending the currently viewed PDF file or a link to it has been implemented. Pinch-to-zoom performance has been improved. A World Cup widget has been added for tracking the current score, schedule, and match results.

In addition to new features and bug fixes, Firefox 152 addresses 77 vulnerabilities (17 under CVE-2026-12328, 12 under CVE-2026-12327, and 11 under CVE-2026-12326). Sixty of these vulnerabilities are caused by memory management issues, such as buffer overflows and accessing memory after it's been freed. These issues could potentially lead to malicious code execution when opening specially crafted pages.
