The Raspberry Pi project has released a new version of the Raspberry Pi OS distribution 2026-06-18 (Raspbian). The distribution is based on the Debian 13 package base and contains about 35 thousand packages in its repository. The desktop environment is based on the compositing server labwc, using the wlroots library from the Sway project. Three builds are prepared for download: a minimal version (537MB) for server systems, a basic desktop version (1.2GB), and a full version with an additional set of applications (1.9GB). The builds are available for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. An update for the old Raspberry Pi OS (Legacy) based on the Debian 12 package base has also been generated.
Key changes:
- The transition to the Linux kernel 6.18 has been made (previously version 6.12 was used).
- Composite server labwc has been updated to version 0.9.7.
- The lxpanel allows the use of enlarged icons.
- New icons have been implemented in the interface for installing additional software (Recommended Software), as well as in the toolbars of the LibreOffice, geany, xarchiver, and eom applications.
- Protection against the simultaneous launch of multiple instances of the applications pishutdown, rpcc, agnostics, bookshelf, gui-runcmd, rp-prefapps, and piclone has been added.
- The package python3-flask has been excluded from the distribution.
