The PorteuX 2.7 distribution release is now available, based on Slackware and inspired by the Slax and Porteus projects. Key features include
PorteuX features preconfigured environments based on the Cinnamon, COSMIC, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE, and Xfce desktop environments, hardware-accelerated multimedia processing on Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA GPUs, a 3-second boot time in Live mode, a read-only system image with pre-installed applications from the PorteuX App Store, rollback support for updates, RAM boot mode (copy2ram), and network boot capability. The project has produced 8 builds, each around 600 Mb in size.
Key changes:
- For working with the NTFS file system, the ntfs-plus driver is used instead of ntfs3.
- New versions of desktop environments KDE Plasma 6.7.0, GNOME 50.2, Cinnamon 6.6.8, COSMIC 1.0.16, LXQt 2.4.0 are implemented.
- Updated package versions include the Linux kernel 7.1.1, GCC 16.1.0, FFmpeg 8.1.1, Qt 6.11.1, NVIDIA 610.43.02.
- During the kernel build, Android Binder, FB_DEVICE, and CONFIG_COREDUMP were included. The sysctl options vm.swappiness=10 and vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50 have been set.
- The LZ4 algorithm is utilized for compression in ZSWAP.
- By default, the BBR (Bottleneck Bandwidth and RTT) congestion control algorithm is used for TCP.
- The build options have been optimized to enhance performance. In Geekbench 6 testing, the PorteuX 2.7 distribution demonstrated higher performance levels than CachyOS (2836 vs. 2700 in single-core testing and 12507 vs. 10890 in multi-core).
- Improved support for webcams.
- A new cursor theme has been introduced, along with the noto-fonts-ttf font.
- The adw-gtk3 theme has been enabled in GNOME.
- Global keyboard shortcuts are in use in COSMIC.
- The gpgmepp library, a set of bindings to GnuPG, is included.
- Support for additional image formats has been added to the KDE image viewer.
- The paper-cursor and wlrctl packages have been removed.
