The Fedora Project Council has announced the suspension of the Community Initiatives process, which was created to implement large-scale long-term projects within the Fedora Linux distribution that do not fit into the six-month release cycle. It was expected that Community Initiatives would direct the community's efforts towards the realization of major ideas and provide necessary resources and support from the council. Projects already initiated under the Community Initiatives process, such as Fedora Forge, Atomic, and Fedora Docs 2026, will continue operations with the full support of the council and will be completed as planned.
The reason for suspending Community Initiatives was the lack of adequate feedback from the community, which surfaced during the approval process for the Fedora AI Developer Desktop project, which was approved despite significant objections during community discussions. It was expected that community members would reach out to council representatives in case of concerns regarding upcoming decisions, but in reality, the council was not informed of possible issues and voted without considering the community's opinion.
The Community Initiatives process has been deemed ineffective and suspended until a new mechanism is created that allows for open and transparent promotion of strategic projects, taking community input into account. It is anticipated that the new mechanism will engage the community in joint discussions about projects at an early stage of idea development, rather than presenting decisions to them after they have already been made.
As one of the possible reform options, the proposal for creating a 'sandbox' is being considered to simplify testing new ideas and experimenting with new technologies in the distribution, without the risk of compromising the stability of the core project. The sandbox would allow for the development of innovative ideas for the distribution alongside the core distribution.
Projects developed in the sandbox will be integrated into the main distribution after certain conditions are met, confirming their value for the project and interest from other developers. The lifecycle of experimental technologies involves several stages, with reviews at time-bound checkpoints and transitioning to the next stage upon meeting specific criteria for each phase.
Regarding the Fedora AI Developer Desktop project aimed at creating atomically updatable desktop editions of Fedora Linux for developers using and developing AI technologies, its discussion has been closed due to the inefficiency of the Community Initiative mechanism. The initiators of this project have been advised to try implementing it through other means. Once the project matures, it can achieve official Fedora edition status by being recognized as a Remix edition after submitting the necessary trademark approval application and receiving confirmation from the FESCo technical committee. Until then, the initiative will remain an independent development, not an official Fedora project.
