The results of the general vote (GR, general resolution) of the project developers have been published. Debian, involved in package maintenance and infrastructure support, discussed the use of large language models and AI tools in distribution development. The fifth item, "Responsible Use of Generative AI," won the vote.
The chosen option neither endorses nor prohibits the use of AI in development, support, documentation, and packaging. It is acknowledged that, when used responsibly, AI tools can significantly improve the productivity of participants, freeing them from routine tasks, and freeing up time for more complex and creative work.
It is proposed that AI-generated code be subject to the same quality standards and licensing requirements as hand-written code. It is not recommended to submit AI-generated code without reviewing, testing, and understanding the nature of the change. All responsibility for changes generated by AI rests with the developers who submit them to the project. Copyright and licensing issues for AI-generated work are addressed within the existing policy. Disclosure of information about the use of AI is encouraged, but not required. Using third-party AI services to work with sensitive data, such as access keys and credentials, or to analyze vulnerabilities that have not yet been publicly disclosed is prohibited. Performing mass automated actions using AI requires prior discussion and must be performed under human supervision.
