The postmarketOS project, developing a Linux distribution for mobile devices, has announced a name change to Nura. The name is inspired by the ancient Nuraghe towers in Sardinia, symbolizing stability and durability, which aligns with the project's goal of extending the lifespan of mobile devices. The logo remains largely unchanged but has been refined for improved readability. The domain has been changed from postmarketos.org to nura.eco.
The renaming is attributed to difficulties in promoting the project due to the long length of the old name and its complexity for some non-English-speaking users in terms of pronunciation and memorability. Confusion in capitalization (postmarketOS, PostMarketOS, or PostmarketOS) and the inability to register a trademark due to the descriptive nature of the old name are also cited. A trademark application for Nura has already been submitted by the project's developers. The new name was chosen after several rounds of voting from over 300 options proposed by the community, and it has been checked for negative connotations in different languages.
The project develops a Linux distribution for mobile devices and smartphones, based on the Alpine Linux package base, the standard C library Musl, and the BusyBox utilities. The aim of the development is to provide a Linux distribution for smartphones and tablets that is independent of the support lifecycle of official firmware and not tied to standardized solutions from major industry players. KDE Plasma Mobile, Phosh, GNOME Mobile, and Sxmo are offered as primary user interfaces, but there is also the option to install other environments, including MATE, COSMIC, and Xfce. Builds are created for 65 devices (32 for community and 33 for testing), including PINE64 PinePhone Pro, Purism Librem 5, OnePlus 6, Fairphone 5, Google Nexus 10, Google Pixel 3a, Nokia N900, Lenovo A60xx, ASUS MeMo Pad 7, as well as various models of Samsung Galaxy and Xiaomi. Limited experimental support is provided for over 600 devices.
