New versions of Wine 11.19, Wine-staging 11.19, and D7VK 2.3

An experimental release of the open implementation of the Win32 API — Wine 11.19 has been published. Since the release of 11.18, 23 bug reports have been closed and 358 changes have been made.

The most significant changes:

  • The GDIPlus library has been updated to support vertical text rendering.
  • The character tables have been updated to Unicode release 18.0.0.
  • Support for DNS query caching has been implemented.
  • The VBScript parser has been improved.
  • Support for IOCTL_DVD_SEND_KEY, IOCTL_DVD_END_SESSION, IOCTL_DVD_GET_REGION, IOCTL_DVD_READ_STRUCTURE, IOCTL_CDROM_CHECK_VERIFY, IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH, IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT, IOCTL_SCSI_GET_ADDRESS, IOCTL_SCSI_GET_CAPABILITIE, and IOCTL_SCSI_GET_INQUIRY_DATA has been added to mountmgr.
  • Bug reports related to the operation of applications: ArcGIS Pro, Time clock SBE 1.2/2.2, BOINC, Paint.net 5.2, Steam 4126040 have been closed.
  • Bug reports related to the operation of games: Command Post, Zombie Army 4: Dead War, Evolution: The Game of Intelligent Life, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Aniimo, Desperados 2: Cooper’s Revenge, Final Fantasy XI Online, Hard Truck Apocalypse have been closed.

Additionally, a release of the Wine Staging project 11.19 has been formed, providing enhanced builds of Wine that include not fully ready or risky patches, currently unsuitable for merging into the main Wine branch. Compared to Wine, Wine Staging provides 279 additional patches. In this new release, Wine Staging has synced with the Wine 11.19 codebase and updated the vkd3d code. Patches that implement structures for configuring parameters and missing type definitions for d3d12 have been moved to the main Wine branch.

Moreover, the release of the D7VK 2.3 project is worth noting, which develops the implementation of the Direct3D 3, 5, 6, and 7 graphics APIs proposed by Microsoft in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. D7VK operates by translating calls to the Vulkan API and allows retro games tied to the Direct3D 3, 5, 6, and 7 APIs to run on Linux using Wine. The project's code is written in C++ and is distributed under the Zlib license. The development is based on the d3d9 backend code from the DXVK project — D7VK translates Direct3D 3, 5, 6, and 7 API calls into Direct3D 9 calls, which are then translated into Vulkan API. The developer does not intend to seek inclusion of D7VK into DXVK, as was the case with Direct3D 8 and Direct3D 9 implementations on top of Vulkan.

In the notes for the D7VK 2.3 release, it is mentioned that the codebase has reached maturity and the project is transitioning to maintenance mode, in which it will plan to produce rare releases with minor refinements and bug fixes. Changes include:

  • Transition to operation on the DXVK 3.1.1 release.
  • Shadow rendering optimization.
  • Enhanced compatibility with mobile GPUs.
  • Unified handling of textures, materials, and viewports for D3D 3/5/6.
  • Implemented ProcessVerticesStrided for D3D 7.
  • Fixes that improve game support:
    • Forsaken,
    • Dark Vengeance,
    • G-Police,
    • Grandia II,
    • Empire Earth,
    • HyperBlade,
    • Need for Speed: Porsche,
    • Redline Racer,
    • Star Trek: Armada,
    • Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, and
    • Z.A.R.
