System76 has added to the pull request acceptance guidelines for the COSMIC desktop environment and to the agreement for participation in the development of the Linux distribution Pop!_OS requirements that prohibit the submission of content generated using AI tools in changes or issue reports. This ban applies to code, comments, and textual descriptions. Initially, the guidelines mentioned the permissibility of using AI for research, testing, and similar tasks, but this note was later removed.
The reasons for the ban include the high workload on maintainers and the desire to focus resources on reviewing changes from core contributors and experienced developers amidst an increase in changes created by newcomers using AI that are often rejected after review.
An exception has been made only for the cosmic-flatpak repository, where each project manages its own Flatpak manifest pointing to the code in its own repository. Applets and extensions for COSMIC are distributed through cosmic-flatpak, installed from the COSMIC Store catalog, and supported by third-party developers. When reviewing changes in cosmic-flatpak, the focus is not on the project's code but on the correctness of the sandbox isolation setup during execution.
