Firmware that transforms the Gemtek Wi-Fi router into a broadband radio signal receiver

The w1700k-sdr project has prepared firmware and a set of utilities that transform the Gemtek W1700K Wi-Fi 7 wireless router into a software-defined radio (SDR) system capable of receiving and analyzing radio signals across a wide range of frequencies. The code is written in C and Python and is distributed under the MIT license, except for the kernel module, which is provided under GPLv2.

After replacing the stock firmware, w1700k-sdr reprograms the MediaTek MT7996 radio chip to capture arbitrary radio signals, unrestricted by Wi-Fi channels. The System on Chip (SoC) Airoha AN7581 used in the router is employed for preliminary data processing from the radio chip and sending it to an external computer via 10-gigabit Ethernet over UDP, with speeds of up to 320 million samples per second (Msps). On the computer, the data is analyzed and visualized using graphs and spectrograms.

The firmware is built from scratch without using any proprietary MediaTek code, utilizing instead code from the mt76 driver, which is distributed under the BSD license. The firmware independently initializes the radio chip and controls it via commands from the host. Instead of being hard-coded to channels, it allows the heterodyne configuration to any frequency within the ranges of 2.081-2.748 GHz, 4.647-7.509 GHz, and 4.707-7.576 GHz with a step size of 2.98 Hz or 11.9 Hz. The frequency can change on the fly with a delay of about 1 ms.
