Release of the MPV 0.42 video player

After nearly a year of development, the release of the open video player MPV 0.42 has been finalized, which branched off from the codebase of the MPlayer2 project in 2013. MPV focuses on developing new features without worrying about maintaining compatibility with MPlayer. The MPV code is distributed under the LGPLv2.1+ license, while some parts remain under GPLv2, but the transition to LGPL is almost complete and the option "--enable-lgpl" can be used to disable the remaining GPL code.

Among the changes in the new version:

  • A new network backend has been added that uses the libcurl library and supports HTTP/2, HTTP/3, and the reuse of already established connections.
  • Menus have been implemented for navigation through DVD-Video discs, Blu-ray HDMV, and BD-J.
  • Support for playback of audio DVDs (DVD-Audio) has been added.
  • Direct playback of ISO images of DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, and Blu-ray discs is now possible.
  • Support for advanced Dolby Vision Profile 7 layers has been added in the vo_gpu_next output module.
  • An option "--audio-spdif=dsd" has been added for passing DSD over PCM (DoP).
  • Support for SRV3 subtitle format used in YouTube has been implemented with the subrandr library.
  • The ability to create custom context menus, displayed on right-click, has been provided and configured in the menu.conf configuration file.
  • A floating button mode with Fluent icons has been added to the built-in OSC (On Screen Controller) graphical interface, which can be enabled with the option "--script-opts=osc-layout=floating".
  • An API for integration with the OSC interface of external thumbnail generators has been added.
  • Support for Wayland protocol extensions for session and color management has been added.
  • An option "--target-trc=scrgb" has been added for output in scRGB format.
  • Support for color spaces for HDR has been improved in Linux builds.
  • An API for rendering via D3D11 has been added to libmpv.
  • Improved capabilities for rendering video in text terminals using sixel, kitty, and tct extensions have been rewritten.
  • A filter "--vf=amf_frc" (AMD Frame Rate Conversion) for changing the frame rate has been added.
  • The code for compensating for the accumulating desynchronization of audio from the displayed video frames over time has been rewritten.
  • Verification is enabled by default. for TLS certificates (--tls-verify).
