Microsoft is continuing to work on a new version of the Edge browser based on Chromium. A link to the installer has appeared online. It can be downloaded and even attempted to run. However, it will likely throw an unknown error, as the software is intended for internal testing.
However, the mere fact that the installer has leaked indicates that development is ongoing and has already reached a certain level. It is expected that Microsoft will present a preview version of the software at the Build developer conference in May, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Recall that in late 2018, Microsoft announced it would abandon the EdgeHTML rendering engine for Microsoft Edge and switch to Chromium. This free browser is based on the Blink engine, which also powers Google Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, and other solutions. At the same time, the company promised to maintain the appearance of Microsoft Edge in the new version, although it is clear that some features will disappear with the transition to the new version.
The preview version of the Microsoft Edge browser was supposed to appear in early 2019 according to Microsoft’s original plans. Although no other details have been provided, evidence found in recent weeks indicates that a release is imminent.
This version will only work on Windows 10; however, it is expected that the browser will eventually be runnable on other platforms, including not only older versions of Windows but also macOS and Linux. Additionally, enthusiasts will likely port it to ReactOS.
