The Russian state corporation Roscosmos is ready to adapt the "Soyuz-5" launch vehicle for the "Sea Launch" project. This was reported by TASS, citing information obtained from sources in the rocket and space industry.
"Roscosmos is ready to support the development of the 'Sea Launch' project by adapting the 'Soyuz-5' rocket for launch from the floating platform 'Odyssey' as part of this program," informed sources stated.
Recall that in 2009, the company 'Sea Launch' declared bankruptcy, and in 2014, launches using the corresponding platform were suspended. In the fall of 2016, S7 Group announced the purchase of the property complex 'Sea Launch'.
According to available information, the company S7 Space (part of S7 Group) is developing its own reusable rocket based on the conceptual design of the 'Soyuz-5' rocket. It should be noted that the 'Soyuz-5' is a two-stage medium-class rocket with a sequential arrangement of stages.
To address the tasks of resuming the launch activities of the 'Sea Launch' rocket and space complex and its 'decommissioning', a permanent headquarters of S7 Space has been organized at the Long Beach Base Port.
According to current plans, one launch using 'Sea Launch' will be carried out this year — the rocket is scheduled to be sent into space in December.
