Developers at Google have finally added to their flagship browser what has long been available in Microsoft Edge. The latest build of Chrome Canary has unveiled Focus Mode and Tab Hover, which displays a thumbnail when you hover the cursor over a tab.
Focus Mode allows users to pin a specific webpage to the taskbar. This feature has been available in Microsoft Edge since the early days of its release. It's expected that Chrome sessions for Incognito and Guest will likely also gain this functionality, meaning users will be able to pin Incognito tabs just like application shortcuts.
The second feature will allow users to view a thumbnail of a webpage simply by hovering the cursor over the tab. This is quite a useful solution, especially when trying to find the right tab among dozens of others. However, it's noted that this function needs to be manually activated for now.
The release version of these features is expected to appear in Chrome 74 or later. It’s also worth noting that copying exclusive features from Microsoft Edge further confirms that a new build based on Chromium is just around the corner.
Previously, there were reports about preparing to implement a new system in Chrome to protect against tracking by websites. This will certainly be useful primarily for mobile devices. For tracking, the JavaScript API was used to determine the user’s mode of transport, whether they were walking or standing still, and so on. The gait recognition technology enabled user identification with a high degree of accuracy.
It’s noted that the latest version of Chrome Canary for both mobile and desktop devices includes the ability to block data collection from sensors.
