What if you didn't think very carefully when creating your account and don't want to set up a new one just for a different identifier? Sony has finally offered a solution — starting tomorrow, you can simply change your online ID in the PlayStation Network. And it's free — at least for the first time.
To start a new life under a new 'sign' in PSN, follow a few simple steps.
- On PlayStation 4: go to 'Settings', select 'Account Management' — 'Account Information' — 'Profile' — 'Online ID', then enter your new online ID and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Through a web browser: log into your PlayStation Network account and select your PSN profile from the menu, click the 'Edit' button next to your online ID, enter the new one and follow the on-screen instructions.
Sony will give players a new chance, but the main thing is not to repeat past mistakes. However, there are no restrictions on reusing this feature. The subsequent change of ID will cost 499 rubles, and for PlayStation Plus subscribers, it will be 249 rubles.
In case there are issues when changing your digital identity, you can always revert to old identifiers. By the way, switching back is free for any previously used and unblocked identifiers, which are permanently tied to a specific user.
All games for PS4 released after April 1, 2018, must support this feature (PS3 and PS Vita do not count). However, Sony cannot guarantee full compatibility and recommends checking the list of verified games for more certainty. Among the potential issues that users may encounter in unverified games are:
- previous online IDs may remain visible to the user and other players in some parts of the game;
- you might lose progress data for these games, including saves, leaderboard data, and trophy data;
- some game and application components may not function properly, both online and offline;
- you might lose access to previously owned content (including paid content), including add-ons and virtual currency.
The network ID of child accounts cannot be changed—you'll have to grow up before you can get rid of that rather tiresome nickname.
When choosing a new network ID, you can display your old one on your profile for 30 days, so friends have a chance to notice the renaming.
