On April 10, 2019, GitHub unexpectedly deleted the repository of the popular utility GoodByeDPI, designed to bypass government censorship of websites on the Internet.
What is DPI, how it is related to blocking, and why to fight it (according to the author):
Providers in the Russian Federation mostly use Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) systems to block websites listed in the banned registry. There is no single standard for DPI; there are numerous implementations from different DPI solution providers, varying in connection type and operation method.
Just a couple of days ago, according to Google's cache, the repository looked much more vibrant:
It can be noted that nearly 2000 people added the utility to their favorites, and 207 made forks of it. But that was three days ago, and now it’s a 404 error.
Here’s how the author described the utility's functionality:
GoodbyeDPI can block packets with redirection from passive DPI, replace Host with hoSt, remove the space between the colon and the host value in the Host header, 'fragment' HTTP and HTTPS packets (setting TCP Window Size), and add an extra space between the HTTP method and the path. The advantage of this bypass method is that it is completely autonomous: there are no external servers, which can be blocked.
