The Proxmox Virtual Environment 5.4 release is available, a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux, aimed at deploying and maintaining virtual servers using LXC and KVM, and capable of serving as a replacement for products like VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer. The size of the installation iso image is 640 MB.
Proxmox VE provides tools for deploying a fully functional industrial-grade virtual server system, managed through a web interface designed for handling hundreds or even thousands of virtual machines. The distribution includes built-in tools for organizing backups of virtual environments and offers out-of-the-box clustering support, including the ability to migrate virtual environments from one node to another without downtime. Features of the web interface include: support for secure VNC console; role-based access management to all available objects (VM, storage, nodes, etc.); and support for various authentication mechanisms (MS ADS, LDAP, Linux PAM, Proxmox VE authentication).
In the new release:
- The package base has been updated to Debian 9.8, utilizing Linux kernel 4.15.18. Updated versions include QEMU 2.12.1, LXC 3.1.0, ZFS 0.7.13, and Ceph 12.2.11;
- The ability to install Ceph through the GUI has been added (a new Ceph storage installer wizard has been proposed);
- Support for translation has been added of virtual machines to sleep mode with memory dump saved to disk (for QEMU/KVM);
- The ability to log into WebUI using universal two-factor authentication
(U2F) has been implemented; - New fault tolerance policies have been added, applicable to guest systems during reboot or shutdown server: freeze (freezing guest machines), fail-over (migration to another node), and default (freezing on reboot and migration on shutdown);
- The installer has been improved, with the ability to return to previous screens without restarting the installation process;
- New options have been added to the wizard for creating guest systems based on QEMU;
- Support for 'Wake On Lan' has been added to automate the power-on of backup PVE nodes;
- The GUI with the container creation wizard is now defaulted to use unprivileged containers.
