Some users report that Microsoft is sending notifications to computers running Windows 7 reminding them of the upcoming end of support for this OS. Support will end on January 14, 2020, and it is assumed that users should upgrade to Windows 10 by that time.
It appears that the notification first appeared on the morning of April 18. Posts on Reddit confirm that some Windows 7 users received the notification on that day. In another Reddit discussion, users report that the notification appeared when starting the computer. The notification titled "Support for Windows 7 is coming to an end in 10 years" specifies the end-of-support date.
The popup also contains a button labeled "Learn more" on the right. Clicking it opens a webpage from Microsoft in the browser, repeating the date and providing various options for users. Clearly, this is about upgrading to a more recent OS.
As promised, the form also includes a field labeled "Do not remind me again," which should stop the notification from appearing in the future if clicked. If the window is simply closed, the notification will reappear soon.
The company clarifies that users can continue using Windows 7, but the operating system will stop receiving software and security updates in 2020. As a result, this will lead to an increased risk of virus and malware attacks. Additionally, developers will gradually discontinue support for Windows 7, so the newest programs may not run on it in a few years. Of course, Microsoft has reminded users that it's best to upgrade to Windows 10 or acquire a new computer.
